In my opinion, one of the main new features offered by cloud systems is the provision of virtualized resources as a service, being virtualization the enabling technology. In other words, one of the relevant contributions of cloud computing is the Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) model. I have prepared a post to describe some of the research challenges in cloud infrastructures that, in my opinion, will be addressed in the new year. The open research issues are mainly related to new virtualization technologies to enable efficient, dynamic and scalable Cloud operation and interoperation.
